The sample of ballads in BDL

The sample of ballads in BDL offers a fair representation of the main themes and forms which one would expect to find within the ballad corpus as a whole.  It is, however, evident that the sample has particular emphases, which can be seen clearly when it is set alongside the range of material found in collections such as DF and the later Irish duanairí.

Elegies and death-tales

Eulogy

Adventure narratives

Rivalries and debates

Onomastic verse

Natural description
