Sequences consisting solely of ballads

One sequence of this kind is attested in the MS.  It occupies over thirteen MS pages, and comprises three ballads,  Poems IX (a very large ballad which occupies most of the space), X and XI. Poem IX tells the story of ‘Caoilte and the creatures’. As the onomastic evidence indicates, the action is located firmly in Ireland, and the ballad is of undoubtedly of Irish origin.  There is no obvious thematic link between it and items X and XI, which are connected in their theme.  They display different dimensions  of an acrimonious debate between Patrick and Oisean, representing the values of the church and the fiana respectively.  Both ballads were very popular in Ireland, and there can be little doubt that they originated in Ireland.  This sequence can therefore be considered to be of Irish provenance, but there is no indication of how it may have reached the BDL scribes.
