(b) MSS

The principal holding of Irish MSS containing heroic ballads is that of the Royal Irish Academy (RIA). RIA MSS are frequently cited in this thesis; these have shelf-marks of the type 23 A 47 (capital letter flanked by numerals), and are easily identified. The RIA holding may be accessed in the first instance through the Catalogue of Irish Manuscripts in the Royal Irish Academy. Note also:

MOL: A duanaire compiled by Michéal Óg Ó Longáin, and now in the possession of Professor William Gillies, University of Edinburgh.

(a) Printed Collections

G: Gillies, J., ed., 1786. A Collection of Ancient and Modern Gaelic Poems. Perth. [Contains 24 ballad texts.]

H: Hill, T.F., 1782-83. ‘Antient Erse Poems’, The Gentleman’s Magazine.

LF: Cited in Section 1. above. This contains diplomatic transcriptions of texts from most of the major eighteenth and nineteenth century collections, with the exception of those in RC. Individual texts may be found through the LF index. The collectors referred to in this work who are accessible through LF are principally:

K: Duncan Kennedy. Where necessary, Kennedy's First and Second Collections are distinguished as K (1) and K (2).
