Welcome back to Calls to Beasts (Part 2)! We shall continue with more calls that will be used to attract beasts and to drive them.

Calf: Goose:
  • Sìol (Islay).
Goat:
  • Sìoc (W. Ross).
Pig:
  • Boitidh; Poitidh (Sutherland) – We have “Boit” for food, when a pig is put to feed for a moment in long grass.
  • Durradh (Argyll).
  • Gus (Islay).
  • Gnius/gniusaidh (Perth).
We have “Sto-foil” for driving them away.

Pony: Ram:
  • Cirain (Garrynamonie, South Uist).
Bull:
  • Torchan (The Isle of Harris).
  • Tuadhi (Sutherland).
We have the two calls “Tòraidh” and “Tóra” (Arran and Perthshire) for attracting a bull and to anger a bull, be careful with using this word though!

Duck: Lamb: Piglets:
  • Poich/poichidh.
  • poichean/puichean (East Perthshire).

We have arrived at the end of the blog! As you can see there are many calls to animals but there must be more that we do not have here. Do you know any of the calls above? Do you have any other calls for other animals? Let us know on facebooktwitter and our own website!
