Bruimiseach

Bruimiseach

Posted by Shona on Thursday 14 July 2016

This week’s word is from the Isle of Lewis: ‘bruimiseach’.

Bruimiseach’ means mess or shambles, with the example “Rinn e bruimiseach dheth” meaning “he made an unholy mess of it.”
There are many Gaelic words with this kind of meaning, and other similar words were collected from this same informant: “rinn thu bod-a-sgeing dheth” meaning “you made an unholy mess of it” and “rinn e gige dheth”, meaning “he made a hash or mess of it.” ‘Bruimiseach’ and these other phrases were collected in Swainbost, in Ness, Isle of Lewis, in 1972.

Another similar phrase was collected in Barvas, Isle of Lewis, in 1971: “bha an t-àite na rall”, meaning “the place was in an absolute mess.”

Have you heard ‘bruimiseach’ or any of these phrases before? Or do you know of other words and phrases also meaning mess or ‘bùrach’? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter.
