Latha na Feachaireachd

Latha na Feachaireachd

Posted by Abi on Thursday 31st of March
Do you all remember this story from last year? A group from Dubai wanted to buy the Isle of Skye Bridge so they could take it to the United Arab Emirates. The idea wasn’t very popular on the island, but there would be new jobs coming when they brought the ferry back. There was a good piece about the story on Coinneach MacÌomhair’s program…but it was April Fools’ Day! The phrases Latha na Feachaireachd and Latha na Gugaireachd were collected in Lochcarnan in South Uist.

There are different stories about how April Fools’ Day began. Some say that it started in 1582 when Pope Gregory XIII changed the old Julian calendar to the new Gregorian Calendar – but not everyone knew about the change and some people kept celebrating New Year on the first day of April instead rather than the first day of January. What fools!

Have you ever played a trick on someone on April’ Fools Day? Or has anyone played one on you? Do you have some good tricks which are good for an office? April Fools’ Day is on a work day after all! We would be very happy to hear your stories.

Remember that we have a new feature for our blogs – you can now create an account and leave comments. Happy April Fools’ Day to you all from the DASG team
