Atharrais Obrach
Posted by Shona on Thursday 24th September 2015
This week’s word is ‘atharrais obrach’, a phrase meaning “hotch potch job.”
This phrase was collected from an informant located in Glasgow but who was originally from Harris, and that person gave an example of the phrase in use as: “Dè an atharrais obrach a tha sin?” meaning “What is that hotch potch job?”
The word “atharrais” means “mimicry” or “imitation” and can also be used as “ag atharrais ormsa” meaning “mimicking me.”
Another informant, from Eochdar, South Uist, said that “riasladh” can also be used in the same way as “atharrais obrach” to describe hotch potch work.
