Babhsaigeadh

Babhsaigeadh

Posted by Alana on Thursday 4th June 2015

This week’s ploy is about a well-loved and classic toy, the seesaw. In the Highlands and Island it’s common practice to get a long plank of wood and place it on a barrel or large rock. This week’s word of the week comes from the Isle of Lewis and is ‘babhsaigeadh’ which is the word for seesaw on the Island. To describe someone seesawing you would use the verb ‘bousigeadh.’

Further south in Uist, the word used to describe the same thing would be ‘dèile-bhogadain.’ The word ‘dèile’ is given to a long flat plank of wood whilst the word ‘bogadain’ describes the up and down motion of the seesaw. Therefore, it’s easy to see where the word comes from.
