Milleag-nan-cruach

Since the nights are getting longer and the weather is improving, this week’s phrase is very fitting, especially if there are children around. We’re talking, this week, about a game called ‘Milleag-nan-cruach.’

The game comes from Uist although there are similar versions in Lewis. Children would more commonly play this during harvest-time when they can easily hide between cornstacks. The game would begin with someone calling “Mhalaic nan cruaich.” In this game children would hide on a counter, they would then try and find their friends and have to catch them on finding them. The first one caught has to count in the next game. This game is a combination of ‘tig’ and ‘hide and seek.’
