Do sheanmhair a stigh an sin!

This week, we have phrases for encouraging dogs, or commands for sheepdogs. The first is “do sheanmhair a stigh an sin!” which was collected in Glasgow from an informant originally from West Uig, Isle of Lewis. This phrase would be used to order a dog to scratch at a hole in the ground.

There are many other commands from this informant in the DASG Fieldwork Archive, for example “Sig!” or “Sig a mach á sin”, to command a dog to get out of the way and lie down. Why not have a look at the other commands too?

Are you familiar with these phrases? What commands would you use for encouraging dogs? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter.
