Cèilidh Ceàrdaich / Dorsaireachd
Although we are seeing some more of the sun now, there are still plenty rainy days! This week’s phrase was recorded in South Uist, ‘cèilidh ceàrdaich’, a saying for spending a rainy day indoors.
Another word from South Uist has also got a similar meaning, ‘dorsaireachd’. This literally translates as ‘walking between doors’, meaning not stepping outside your house. This was used on rainy days when working outside was not conducive. For example, “cha robh mi ach a’ dorsaireachd mun taigh fad an latha” meaning “All I did was mill around the house all day.”
‘Cèilidh ceàrdaich’ and ‘dorsaireachd’ were both collected in Garrynamonie, South Uist, between 1987–88.
