Ìoc

Ìoc

Posted by Ola on 22 January 2015

After a number of words connected with rich food and holidays, perhaps we should look at this word: ìoc ‘a triangular piece of cloth inserted, e.g. into the sides of a skirt to make it wider.’

There are two other examples on our website: a’ cur ìoc ann an aodach and Bha a’ bhriogais ro bheag dha agus chuir e ìoc as chùlaibh aice. (‘The trousers were too small for him so he inserted ìoc at their back.’)

This word was recorded in Lewis in 1972 by Angus John Smith, who was working on the Historical Dictionary of Scottish Gaelic at the time.

And this gives us a chance to let you know that the 34 word lists collected by A. J. Smith are now available on the DASG website as part of Faclan bhon t-Sluagh. We hope that you will find them useful and interesting.

This means that approximately 65% of the Fieldwork Archive is now available online, representing c. 25,000 headwords.
