Mac-Talla: Cogadh Eorpach

Many of Mac-Talla’s news items were a little bit silly, and they would sometimes print strange prophecies of things they thought were going to happen. At other times, however, they expected and foresaw much more sensible things, and said things that other papers often wouldn’t. Here is Mac-Talla in 1892 saying that a devastating European war is coming sometime soon, one that would spread throughout the world:

The kingdoms of Europe are very distrustful of each other. The second country fears that the first will attack her without warning. France is waiting for a chance at revenge on Germany for the war of 1870-71 even though she herself started that war. Germany is preparing against France. Russia is trying to get a chance at the Turk, and so on. They are all fully armed and waiting for the first blow. It is likely that there won’t be a war for a number of years yet, but it is coming, and it will be a terrible war. There is no doubt that Britain will have a hand in it before it is over, and other countries likewise. Only Britain is taking things slowly and trying to put things right at home.

Such a war didn’t come for more than twenty years but the conditions for the war were there as early as that. The one thing truly wrong in their prophecy was that they they thought Britain wouldn’t be involved in the build-up to the war!
