An àiteach
Posted by Shona on Thursday 6th April 2017
Our Word of the Week is ‘An àiteach’ as we approach Easter.‘An àiteach’ is used to refer to “spring work”, or the agricultural work that would be undertaken in the spring. This meaning was given by an informant in South Bragar on the Isle of Lewis.
The word àiteach is fairly common regarding agriculture and farm work, and there are some further examples of this word in the DASG Fieldwork Archive: ‘Tha e ri aiteach’; ‘ag aiteach’ agus ‘talamh àiteach.’
Have you heard this use of ‘an àiteach’ or any of these other words before? Or do you know of other words and phrases with a similar meaning or use? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter.
