John Dan (Johnny) MacNeil was born on March 14, 1890, a twin to Alexander Donald (Alex Dan), in St. Rose, Inverness County. He was the son of James MacNeil and Margaret MacLellan, but he was raised by his aunt, Ann MacLellan (Anna Dhòmhnaill Bhàin), on Victoria Road in Dunvegan. His people came from the Isle of Barra.
Known as “Iain Dhòmhnaill Bhàin,” John Dan married Mary Sarah MacIsaac of Cape Mabou/Inverness, the daughter of Angus MacIsaac and Margaret Gillis, on July 3, 1938. A respected Gaelic speaker and singer, John Dan worked as a carpenter and also engaged in blacksmithing in his forge. He is remembered in the community as being "uabhasach fhéin sìtheil", a very peaceful man. In Brìgh an Òrain, Lauchie MacLellan names John Dan as a friend and mentor, and considered him to be his favourite Gaelic singers.
He died in 1990 in Inverness and is laid to rest in St. Margaret of Scotland Cemetery, Broad Cove.
