Neil MacKay was from Big Baddeck, Victoria County, and the son of Daniel MacKay and Margaret MacLeod. Neil, along with his brother Murdock and twin sisters Martha and Margaret, were known locally for singing Gaelic. The siblings often sang for enjoyment at house gatherings, parties, and other social events in the community.

Neil married Jessie Ann McLean of Upper Baddeck. Together, they had a daughter, Dorothy "Dotty", and a son who died in infancy. Neil worked as a farmer, contributing to the rural life of his community while keeping the Gaelic singing tradition alive in his family.
