Malcolm Stephen “Maxie Dan Angus” MacNeil (September 21, 1927 – February 26, 2015) was born and raised on the Tailor Road in Highland Hill, Victoria County. He was the son of Dan Angus and Katie (MacCormick) MacNeil and descended from Barra settlers. In 1948, Maxie left home for Ontario, working first in Sudbury and on the Lake Boats before settling in Toronto. There, he was employed by Canada Millwrights Ltd. until 1974. He married Joan Rickett, and together they raised three children.

In 1976, Maxie returned to Highland Hill with his family and set up a sawmill. He had a profound respect for the land and was recognized as Nova Scotia Woodlot Owner of the Year in 1994. Back home, Maxie became an integral part of the Iona Gaelic community. A passionate cultural ambassador, he actively participated in various organizations, including the Nova Scotia Highland Village, Clan MacNeil, and the Board of Trade.

Maxie was a member of the Iona Gaelic Singers and contributed to Gaelic programming through the Highland Village and the Christmas Island Féis. He was a beloved figure at milling frolics across the island, renowned for his lively presence and encouragement of others to sing. With a clear and strong voice, Maxie amassed an extensive collection of Gaelic songs. His singing talent took him as far as Vancouver for Expo ‘86.

Deeply proud of his heritage and ancestry, Maxie documented family stories and photographs to preserve them for future generations. He eagerly shared his knowledge and love of Gaelic culture, leaving a lasting impact on his community.
