Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography

Flora Jane “Janie” MacNeill was born on August 23, 1881, in Ainslie Glen, Inverness County. She was the daughter of Neil and Annie (MacKay) MacKinnon and a descendant of emigrants from the Isle of Muck.

Janie grew up on the East Side of Ainslie Glen and later married Dan MacNeill of the West Side. Together they had two children, Marion - a local school teacher - and Donald. Janie and her siblings were Gaelic singers, and her brother Hector served as a precentor in the local Presbyterian church.

Her MacKinnon relatives continue to reside in her childhood home in Ainslie Glen today, a lasting connection to her legacy. Janie was 97 years old when she was recorded for the Cape Breton Folklore Collection. She passed away peacefully at home on December 13, 1979.
