Dan Rory "Mhurchaidh" MacNeil was from Jamesville, Victoria County, the son of Murdoch (Murchadh Eòin Mhóir) MacNeil and Mary (Dòmhnull Thormoid) MacNeil. Born October 12, 1907, he was one of nine children. His brother, John K., is also featured in the Cape Breton Folklore Collection.
Dan Rory lived in the Iona area, where he worked as a farmer his entire life. A dedicated tradition-bearer, he was a member of the Iona Gaelic Singers and enjoyed traveling to events with Maxie Dan Angus MacNeil and Mickey John H. MacNeil.
A lifelong bachelor, Dan Rory made his home for a while in Ottawa Brook with Anna Theresa and Johnny MacKenzie. Dan Rory passed away on August 1, 1986.
