Malcolm Angus MacLeod was born September 6, 1897 in Birch Plain to Norman and Annie (Morrison) MacLeod, descendants of settlers from Scalpay, Harris. He spent his life on the North Shore, working as a fisherman, farmer, and linesman.
Malcolm Angus married Annie Mae MacDermid, and both she and his sister, Katie Rogers, are featured in the Cape Breton Folklore Collection. He was a well respected singer with a rich repertoire and deep knowledge of the region’s singing traditions and oral history. Malcolm Angus passed on much of his repertoire to his long time friend, John Shaw. As a member of the North Shore Gaelic Singers, his voice was preserved on several recordings.
He passed away in 1984 at the age of 86 and is buried in Pine Hill Cemetery, River Bennet.
