Malcolm MacLean was born in Big Brook, Inverness County, to Hugh Michael MacLean and Lillian (MacLeod). His family traced their roots to Eigg, Scotland, arriving in Nova Scotia in the 1790s.Malcolm attended school in Big Brook, Port Hood, and later St. Francis Xavier University. While at university, he joined a group of students who volunteered for overseas service during World War I.Following the war, Malcolm worked in Halifax and Detroit before returning to Big Brook to assist with the family farm. Later, he took on a role as a cook for the Canadian National Railway (CNR).
