Dan K. MacLeod, known locally as “Danny Kate Sarah,” was born in 1909 in Grand River, Richmond County. He was descended from emigrants from the Isle of Harris. He was the son of a widow, Kate Sarah MacLeod. He had one younger brother, Lester Angus.
Danny spent many years serving in the army before returning home to Cape Breton. Upon his return, he took on the role of caretaker for several cemeteries in the area, including Hardwood Hill in Sydney. He lived in a small house on the Loch Lomond Road, just across from Grand River Cemetery.
A beloved member of the community, Danny sang in the local church choir and was known for his lively spirit and love of storytelling. He relished any chance to gather with friends, share stories, and enjoy a laugh. Danny was a well-liked and memorable character, fondly remembered by all who knew him.
