Date Of Language Notes | [Note added 12/4/18:] Although the publication date for this text is not certain, this text's date of creation is highly likely to be the mid 19th. century. The style of language is in keeping with this period, reference to the state of Victoria in Australia (named in 1851) suggest that it could not have been written before the founding of the colony. Finally, the subject of the text is to announce and raise the funds for the building of a Gaelic church and manse - 'Tigh-aoraidh iomchuidh, agus Tigh-chòmhnuidh do fhear-teagaisg' (p. 1) in Melbourne. Such a church was in fact built: 'St Andrews Church (the Gaelic Church) was constructed on the north west corner of Queensberry and Rathdowne Streets, Carlton [in Melbourne] in 1854-55. It was opened in May 1855. It was a Free Presbyterian Church. [...] The church was demolished in 1938' (Victorian Heritage Data Report accessed 12/4/18). It seems highly likely that this was the planned Gaelic church, and that therefore this text was composed and published between 1851 and, the construction of St Andrews Church in 1854. |
