Date Of Language NotesFasti ecclesiae scoticanae, Vol. 4 (1915), p. 97, states that the subject of this elegy, the minister of Kilninver and Kilmelford, John Ferguson (Iain MacFhearghais), died in 1841. The editor of Typographia Scoto-Gadelica (1915), p. 119, lists another undated edition of this work and believes it to have been published earlier than the 1855 edition. We can be confident, then, that the text was composed between 1841 and 1855, and likely to be have composed close to the date of the minister's death.

Geographical Origins NotesThe full title of this work states the author, Ann Ferguson, as being 'an Sgireachd a' Chlachain 'An Ceanntire'. The other, possibly earlier, edition of the work, listed in Typographia Scoto-Gadelica (1915), p. 119), states in its English title that, 'This Poem was composed by Ann Ferguson of Clachaig, Kintyre [...]'. It has not been possible to locate Clachaig, but the information available suggests that the author was from Kintyre, and likely from the near the township of Clachan in the north of Kintyre.
