Sarah Marie “Sadie” Taker was born in Christmas Island, Cape Breton County. The daughter of Joseph MacKinnon and Margaret Gillis, she was descended from “Big John MacKinnon” who emigrated from Barra in 1821 and settled in Beaver Cove. Sadie’s father John taught school for a long time and settled in Big Beach, where he became a merchant. Joseph and Maggie had six children, Sadie was the eldest. In 1906, Sadie moved to Quebec, where she married Thomas Symonds Taker. In later years, she moved back to Cape Breton and was living on the Crandall Road, Port Hastings.
