Malcolm Murdock Smith was born November 24, 1909 in North River Bridge, Victoria County, one of seven children of William Smith and Johanna “Josie” MacAskill. His Smiths originally came from the Isle of Lewis. He married Irene Agnes LeBlanc of Margaree Forks, and together they made their home in Sydney.
Malcolm was widely recognized as a fantastic Gaelic singer, known for his clear, strong voice and a robust repertoire, which featured many milling songs. A dedicated supporter of Gaelic culture, he was an active member of the Cape Breton Gaelic Society.
He died December 30, 1993 and was laid to rest in North River, leaving behind a lasting contribution to the island’s musical and cultural traditions.
