Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography
Descended from Lochaber emigrants, Dan Finlay (Dòmhnall Aonghais Bhàin) of Mabou Harbour was the son of Angus and Seonaid Iain Mhòir Rankin. He was born May 1, 1908. His great-grandmother was Jessie, sister of Allan the Ridge, and many of the Ridge’s compositions could be found in his repertoire.
Dan Finlay never married and lived with his brother, Donald A., in Mabou Harbour. Both were fishermen—Donald A. fished for lobster, while Dan Finlay focused on salmon. He kept salmon nets off the shore of his property, and carried on the deep-rooted fishing traditions of his community. He passed away on February 25, 1981.
