Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography

Roderick “Rod” William Munroe, known locally as Rory William, was from Malquish, Cape Breton County, a small community nestled between Gabarus and Forchu. Born August 14, 1914, he was the son of Donald Munro and Mary (née MacDonald) of Gabarus, and a descendant of Munroes from North Uist.

Rod worked as a carpenter and moved to Sydney in 1939. In 1941, he married Florence Margaret Phillips of Mira Road. Together, they raised five children in Sydney, while maintaining strong ties to Rod’s beloved home community of Malquish.

A devoted Gàidhlig scholar, Rod read and wrote the language fluently and embraced every opportunity to speak it. He was a composer of Gaelic songs, a gifted storyteller, and a self-taught fiddle player who often played at community gatherings. He was also a valued community singer, frequently called upon to perform at funerals and local events, something he did with quiet honour and deep respect. Singing in his Gaelic language to honour community members who had passed meant a great deal to him. After his death, it was discovered that Rod had never accepted payment for singing at funerals; he had quietly offered this service from the heart. In keeping with his spirit, his family donated the money he would have received back to the church.

Rod and Florence were deeply committed to their community. Rod served as a precentor in the church and was admired not only for his talents but also for his kindness, generosity, and the way his presence made others feel seen and valued.

His handwritten and typed songbook, which he carried with him everywhere, and his fiddle remain cherished keepsakes in the Munroe family.

On March 21, 1984, Rod and Florence lost their lives in a tragic car accident, a profound and painful loss to their family and community. Their legacy of compassion, cultural stewardship, and unwavering community spirit continues to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.
