Jessie MacRae
Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography
Jessie MacRae was born and raised in Rear Big Hill, Victoria County. Her great-grandfather, Angus Tailor Morrison, emigrated from the Isle of Lewis to St. Ann’s Bay. Jessie recounted that he was a ninth-generation descendant of a Norwegian king—a family tradition that, whether historically accurate or not, reflects an awareness of the connections between the Gaels and the Vikings.
Born on January 13, 1908, she was one of nine children born to Christopher Morrison of Big Hill and Margaret “Peggy” MacLeod of Cain’s Mountain, near Little Narrows. Jessie later married Daniel Murdoch MacRae of Upper Middle River.
Jessie was known for her blunt wit and sharp sense of humor. She was an active member of the Ephraim Scott Presbyterian Church in South Haven and had a deep love for the Gaelic language, storytelling, and community gatherings. She enjoyed speaking Gaelic, visiting friends, and attending local Gaelic events, always embracing her heritage with pride.
Jessie passed away on October 15, 1995.
