Malcolm J. MacNeil was from Benacadie Pond, Cape Breton County, the son of James N. MacNeil of Benacadie Pond and Mary MacIntyre. His MacNeil ancestors emigrated from Barra.

Malcolm married Christie MacKenzie of Benacadie West, and together they raised a family of nine. A hardworking farmer, he followed in his father’s footsteps, tending the land with dedication. He was also a skillful fisherman, making the most of each season's catch.Quiet and dependable, Malcolm was respected for his integrity and strong work ethic. He was a faithful member of St. Barra’s Parish and a valued member of his community. Malcolm J’s wife Christie is also featured in the Cape Breton Folklore Collection.
