Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography

Michael John MacNeil was born on November 4, 1916 in Glace Bay and raised in Rear Big Beach, Cape Breton County. He was the only child of John L. MacNeil, a coal miner, and Mary Jane MacNeil of Benacadie Glen. Mary Jane died either in childbirth or when Mike was very young, and John L. never remarried.

In 1940, Mike married Mary Sarah “Sadie” MacNeil of Shenacadie. As a young adult, he moved to the Sydney area for work. He first lived in the Pier, later building a home in the Ashby housing development in 1955. He worked at the Steel Plant, and he and Sadie raised a family of ten children.

Mike was well known for his deep love of Gaelic music and community life. He served as president of the Ashby Legion and earned the nickname “Mike the Prompter” for his role at local dances, where he called and prompted square sets for dancers. He was active in the Cape Breton “Scotch music” scene, calling sets for many of the island’s best-known fiddlers, including Winston “Scotty” Fitzgerald and Sandy MacInnis. For many years, he also hosted Wednesday night music sessions at the Ashby Legion, gatherings remembered for their lively tunes and warm camaraderie.

A devoted family man and proud culture bearer, Mike had a gift for bringing people together through music. He passed away on September 9, 1987 and is laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery in Sydney Forks.
