John Rory MacNeil (Iain Ruairi Mhìcheil Steaphain, Ruairidh ‘ic Dhòmhnaill Òig) was born in Barra Glen, Victoria County, in 1915. He was the son of Michael S. (Micheil Steaphain) and Catherine Campbell (Catrìona nighean Eòghainn Chaluim Eachainn). John Rory married Betty "Red Rory" MacLean (Ealasaid Ruairidh Dhòmhnaill Ruairidh), and together they raised a family of four.
John Rory worked on the land as a farmer and woodsman, and he also served on the Iona–Grand Narrows car ferry. A gifted tradition bearer, he was an exceptional Gaelic singer, known for his sharp memory and keen sense of humor. He was known for his courteous nature and was a cherished presence at milling frolics and ceilidhs, where his wit and talent brought joy to all who attended. He was an active member of the Iona Gaelic Singers.
John Rory’s brother Stephen is also featured in the Cape Breton Folklore Collection.
