Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography

Thomas R. “Tom” MacLean was born August 23, 1886 in Rear Christmas Island, Cape Breton County. One of eight children born to Rory MacLean and Flora Bryden, his brother, Joe Allan MacLean, is also featured in the Cape Breton Folklore Collection.

Descended from settlers from the Isle of Barra, Tom grew up on the family farm in Rear Christmas Island. He later made his home in Sydney. Over the years, he took on many kinds of work—cutting pit timber in the winters, farming, and a range of other work as opportunities arose.

Tom never married; he is remembered for his work ethic and deep roots in his home community.
