Rory MacLean, known locally as Ruairidh Mathanach, was baptized on November 22, 1883 at St. Joseph's Church, Southwest Margaree. His parents were John Matheson and Sarah MacLean of Piper's Glen. He had an uncle Archie, known as Gilleasbuig Beag, that lived with him.
Rory did general farm work for his neighbours, and his community, in turn, took good care of him. He is remembered as a funny man and was especially skilled at cutting seed potatoes for planting. According to the 1931 Canadian Census, Rory MacLean is listed as living in Piper's Glen; his father born in Scotland and his mother born in Nova Scotia. Rory moved to Victoria Road in Dunvegan in the 1930's, and in the late 1950's he moved to MacEachen Road.
He died in the Inverary Manor in Inverness in 1978 and is laid to rest at St. Margaret of Scotland Cemetery, Broad Cove.
