MACLPE01 Peter MacLeanPeadar Jack Pheadair Chaluim Ghobha(October 23, 1913 - January 11, 2013)

Peter Jack MacLean was raised in the Highlands of Rear Christmas Island, a region deeply rooted in Barra settlement traditions. Born October 23, 1913, he was the son of John P. “Jack” and Annie (née MacInnis) MacLean. A tall, self-assured, and charming man, Peter captivated the world with his piercing blue eyes, quick wit, and rich Barra Gaelic.

Peter’s lifelong love of song was nurtured by his mother, Bean Jack Pheadair, a noted Gaelic singer of her time. His father, although not a singer, had a profound appreciation for Gaelic poetry, which also influenced Peter’s deep connection to the oral tradition. Peter was deeply immersed in cultural traditions in the home and community.

Raised in a nearly exclusively Gaelic-speaking environment, Peter grew up in a taigh-céilidh where Gaelic was not only the language of daily life but also the medium for cultural expression. Winter nights were often spent in lively song sessions and discussions about the poetry of great Gaelic bards, leaving a lasting impression on him.

A fiddler in his youth, Peter also trained as a carpenter from an early age, learning the trade in the local area. Like many of his generation, he later spent two decades working in the Boston area, where he became an active member of the Cape Breton Gaelic Club, engaging in nights filled with fiddle music and song. In 1965, his singing led to an invitation to perform with the North Shore Gaelic Singers at the Newport Folk Festival, where he shared the stage with luminaries such as Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.

Peter returned to live in Cape Breton with his wife, Margaret (née MacNeil), in 1972. He quickly re-immersed himself in the cultural life of his community, joining the Iona Gaelic Singers and becoming a fixture at milling frolics across the island. He was known for his strong, melodious voice and natural gift of ornamentation.

Throughout his life, Peter’s love of song flourished. He delighted in singing with others, supporting learners, and inspiring newcomers and seasoned performers alike. Peter Jack MacLean lived a long, generous life defined by music, community, and friendship, leaving an enduring legacy in the Gaelic-speaking world he loved so deeply. Peter passed away on January 11, 2013.
