Neil Allan MacLean was born in Scotsville (1897-1992), Inverness County to Alexander MacLean and Annie MacDonald. His ancestors, the MacLeans, emigrated from the Isle of Rum in 1826, establishing deep roots in the region. Neil married Dolena MacQuarrie, and together they raised a family of ten (five daughters and five sons) on their farm near Lake Ainslie.
For 25 years, Neil Allan operated a sawmill along the banks of the Margaree River. In addition to his work at the mill, he fished for gaspereaux and eels and spent time lumbering. Renowned as a "troubleshooter," Neil Allan was the first to respond whenever there was an issue in the community, always willing to lend a hand.
Neil was a beloved figure in Scotsville, living on what is now Lakeview Drive. He was deeply community-minded, with a passion for music. A talented Gaelic singer, he often sang both in Gaelic and English in church and at home. He was also known for playing the chanter, bringing joy to many through his music. His daughter, Alice Freeman, has continued her father's love of Gaelic language and culture, and has done much to support young musicians and celebrate and promote Gaelic in Inverness County.
