Murdoch Dan MacLean was born in Tarbot, Victoria County, one of nine children of Allan MacLean (Ailean Mór) and Rhodena Matheson. His MacLean ancestors came from the Lochs, Isle of Lewis.
Murdoch Dan married Mary Isobel MacIver, and together they raised a family of six children.
For many years, the couple lived in Tarbot, where Mary Isobel briefly served as postmistress before taking on the mail route. They later relocated to Boston for a time, eventually returning to Tarbot to enjoy their retirement. Murdoch Dan worked in the construction industry across Nova Scotia.
A lover of Gaelic song, Murdoch Dan was a well-known singer in the community. He sang in the choir and served as a respected precentor at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in North River.
He lived a long and healthy life, and is laid to rest in Goose Cove Cemetery.
