Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography
Jessie Mary MacLeod | Seònag Mairead ni’n Dòmhnaill ’ic Iain ’ic Iain was born on July 3, 1899 in Breton Cove to Donald John MacInnis and Annie MacLeod. Her paternal grandfather was John MacInnis, whose father, Donald MacInnis, was born in Lewis in 1810 and died in P.E.I. around 1850. Jessie Mary had two brothers, John Malcolm and Murdoch D.
Before her marriage, Jessie Mary worked in a lobster factory at Breton Cove shore. She married Roderick "Roddie" MacLeod in 1922 and they had one son, Angus, who died in infancy.
Jessie Mary was a kind and generous friend and neighbour. If anyone in the area was sick, she would be called upon to help. Without doubt or hesitation, she would go and stay until the person was well again, no matter the duration. She was an exceptional hostess, who loved company and music and was a terrific baker. She often sang locally at house gatherings and milling frolics. Her photograph appears on the cover of the 1986 recording A Tribute to the North Shore Gaelic Singers: Songs from Cape Breton Island. In this collection, she shares cultural knowledge surrounding local cures and wedding customs.
