Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography
Stephen MacKinnon was born September 30, 1902 in Big Pond, Nova Scotia, to Ian MacKinnon and Mary MacNeil. He was one of seventeen children. Locally, he was known as Steafan Iain Pheigi Ailein, a name reflecting his paternal grandmother, the poetess Peggy Allan (née MacIntyre) of Rear Big Pond, whose compositions were widely known throughout the southern half of the island.. His ancestors on both sides hailed from the Isle of Barra. Peggy Allan’s husband, Jonathan, was a bard who emigrated from Barra.
Stephen married Mary Catherine MacNeil of Big Pond, and together they settled in Sydney, where they raised a family of twelve. A skilled carpenter, he worked in the Sydney area, but his deep connection to the Gaelic language and culture remained at the heart of his life.A tradition bearer in his own right, Stephen was steeped in the songs and stories of his ancestors. He often sang at home with his family and occasionally traveled back to Big Pond to share songs at St. Mary’s Church Hall. His repertoire included local compositions, some passed down from his grandmother and his older brothers Joe and James MacKinnon. His wife, Mary, frequently joined him on the choruses, adding to the richness of their shared musical tradition. He died July 17, 1984.
