Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography

Mary Ann Devoe MacKenzie was a cherished matriarch of Gaelic tradition in Washabuck Bridge, Victoria County. She was the daughter of Simon Devoe of Little Bras d’Or and Ellen MacKenzie of Washabuck. Mary Ann married John Stephen MacKenzie, and together they raised a family of twelve, many of whom carried on the rich musical and cultural legacy of their parents.

Her sons Hector and Carl MacKenzie became celebrated fiddlers on Cape Breton Island. Hector composed a tune in her honour, “Memories of Mary Ann MacKenzie,” which has been recorded by her nieces and nephews in the Barra MacNeils. Mary Ann and her husband were fluent Gaelic speakers and accomplished Gaelic singers, creating a home filled with music and culture. Their house became a gathering place for the community, where ceilidhs and musical evenings were commonplace.

Known for her quick wit, remarkable memory, and a singing voice perfectly suited for Gaelic songs, Mary Ann helped foster a talented and deeply connected musical family. Some of her grandchildren have become well-known members of musical groups such as The Barra MacNeils and Slàinte Mhath.

A devoted community member, Mary Ann was an active participant in the Holy Rosary Ladies Society of Washabuck. Her warmth, humour, and contributions to Cape Breton’s Gaelic and musical traditions continue to resonate through her family and community.
