John Rannie MacKeigan
Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography
John Ranald “John Rannie” MacKeigan, of North Uist descent, was born and raised in Trout Brook, Cape Breton, and later made his home in Marion Bridge. He was the son of Donald Archibald “Archie” MacKeigan and Margaret MacKinnon, and one of three siblings.
As a young boy attending school on Bengal Road, John Rannie was taught to read and write Gaelic—a skill he would carry with him throughout his life. He had a deep love for Gaelic song and story, and was known for his rich knowledge of tradition and his ability to precent (lead psalm singing) in church.
John married twice. His first wife was Hannah MacQueen from Framboise, with whom he had a son, Donald John “Donnie”. After Hannah's passing, he married Mary Elizabeth Clarke.
John worked as a carpenter from 1925 to 1955, building many homes in the Sydney area. In 1956, he became Superintendent of Highways for Cape Breton County. After retiring in the early 1970s, he returned to carpentry—his true passion. Even into his eighties, he was still building houses, and his craftsmanship and energy were admired by all who knew him.
A respected tradition bearer and a man of many talents, John Rannie MacKeigan’s contributions to both his community and Gaelic culture were lasting and meaningful.
