John Angus MacKinnon was born May 25, 1902 in Upper Grand Mira, Cape Breton County, to John and Mary Ann (MacIntyre) MacKinnon, descendants of settlers from South Uist. In 1935, he married Mary Catherine Thomas of Deep Cove, Gabarus, and together they raised a family of eleven.
John Angus and his family first lived in Upper Grand Mira before moving to River Ryan and later settling in Scotchtown, where some of his family still resides today. A devoted member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Scotchtown, he was employed with Dominion Coal Company until his retirement and later worked with the Sydney Board of Trade.
John Angus was known for his beautiful singing voice and was always willing to share a song when asked. He frequently sang at parties and gatherings. John passed away on April 25, 1996.
