Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography

Charles Angus "Charlie" MacEachen was born in St. Rose on August 3, 1898. His father, Hugh "The Miller," was from Broad Cove, and his mother, Christine MacKinnon, was from St. Rose.

His grandfather, Donald the Miller, hailed from South Uist and initially settled in Mount Young before acquiring land in Rear Broadcove on the Campbellton Road. The property had a substantial brook, which Donald used to establish a water-powered grist mill and shingle/sawmill. The family became known as 'Muinntir a’ Mhuilein,' or 'the Mill People.' Donald passed the mill on to his sons, Dan, and Hughie, Charlie's father. While grist mills became obsolete by Charlie's time, he and his brother Lauchie continued to operate the sawmill and maintained a farm.

Charlie married Ethel Teresa Abriel on July 29, 1930, and together they raised a family of four in Broad Cove. Charlie was a cherished member of the Broadcove community and was well known for his wit. 'Charlie stories' are still remembered in Broadcove today.

He passed away on March 13, 1993, and is buried in St. Margaret of Scotland cemetery, Broadcove.
