Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography

Donald “Munroe” MacDonald was born on May 1, 1919, in Gabarus Lake, Cape Breton County, to Phillip Dan and Christy Mary Munroe. He descended from emigrants from North Uist and married Mary Catherine, the sister of local Gaelic tradition bearers, Alex “George” and John Neil MacLean.

A notable Gaelic singer in the Gabarus area, Donald was an active participant in milling frolics and house parties, where local singers would gather to share their songs. Donald was known for having a rich tenor voice and would sing milling songs at an elevated pitch. In addition to his musical contributions, he worked as a carpenter during the construction of The Fortress of Louisbourg. A respected elder at Zion Wesley United Church, Donald's influence extended beyond music into his community life.

He passed away on September 15, 1993, and is laid to rest in Zion Cemetery in Gabarus Lake.
