Mary Evelyn “Bobbie” MacDonald (May 18, 1934 - January 6, 2024) of Port Hood, Inverness County, was deeply rooted in Gaelic culture and community. She married James Dan “Jim” MacDonald in 1961. Born to Beatrice and John Alex MacDonald, Bobbie’s early memories were steeped in the Gaelic songs sung by her mother and grandmother. Her paternal great grandfather was Angus MacDonald (Aonghas mac Alasdair) was a bard and well-known seanchaidh and folklorist. Her love for the language and music blossomed as she became an integral member of the Gaelic singing group, Coisir an Eilein, where her beautiful voice and joy for singing left a lasting impression.
Bobbie cherished Cape Breton’s musical traditions, finding happiness in square dances and fiddle tunes. A beloved hostess, her home was a haven for gatherings filled with laughter, tea, and delicious baked goods. She shared her cultural pride through her cooking, hospitality, and warm spirit, making every guest feel welcome.
Her travels to Ireland and Scotland deepened her love of Gaelic heritage, and she embraced every aspect of the tradition, from tartan to music. Bobbie’s faith, humor, and resilience carried her through life, inspiring those around her. She and her husband, Jim shared a life rich in adventure, and celebration of their shared cultural roots.
