Alexander John "Alec" MacDonald was born January 2, 1905 in West Middle River, Victoria County, the son of Angus Donald MacDonald and Lucy Annie (Nicholson). His grandfather, John MacDonald, emigrated from Ross-shire, Scotland with his family at the age of nine and settled on Gillanders Mountain.
As a young man, Alec went to work in Colorado. While there, he married Jessie Belle MacKinnon of Gairloch Mountain in Denver. Together, Alec and Jessie had two children, June and Douglas, and made their home in Nederland, Colorado. Due to declining health, Alec eventually returned to Cape Breton and resettled in West Middle River.
He passed away in 1980 and is buried in Middle River Cemetery.
