Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography
Hector Allan MacCormick was a Gaelic speaker and singer from Framboise, Richmond County, with roots tracing back to emigrants from North Uist. He was born December 2, 1906 in Belfry, Richmond County, one of thirteen children of John E. and Mary MacCormick.
Hector married Mary Maggie Strachan, and together they raised three children in Framboise. A man deeply respected for his command of the Gaelic language—both spoken and written—he was often called upon for transcription and translation work. He welcomed every opportunity to share a song and was known for his warmth and generosity in keeping the language and its music alive.
He travelled to Scotland several times and cherished the connections he made with Gaels and relatives there. During the Second World War, Hector served in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. After returning home, he worked as a fisherman, farmer, and for the Department of Highways.
Hector died May 31, 1986 and is buried in St. Andrew’s Cemetery in Framboise. He is remembered as a dedicated family man and a valued bearer of Gaelic language and song in his community.
