Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography

John “Neil” Gillis was a noted Gaelic singer from Gillisdale, Inverness County. Born in Gillisdale to Alexander R. (Sandy) and Margaret “Maggie Sarah” Gillis, Neil was descended from the Gaelic-speaking settlers of Morar. He grew up in a musical family as one of six siblings: Rita Chisholm, Mae MacGillivray, Christine Gillis, Angus R., Charlie, and Donald.

Neil played a pivotal role in fostering Gaelic music on Cape Breton Island, notably as an influential figure in the creation of the Gaelic singing group, Coisir an Eilein. During World War II, Neil served with distinction in the Cape Breton Highlanders. Upon his return, he settled in Gillisdale, building a home near the St. Mary’s & MacDougall Cemetery.

A man of many skills, Neil worked as a carpenter, drove the school bus, and took on various odd jobs to support his community. He was renowned for his beautiful singing voice, characterized by exquisite timing and deep expression - skills he absorbed from his mother, Maggie Sarah, known in Gaelic as “Bean Shandaidh Sheumais.”

Known for his warmth and generosity, Neil was always eager to encourage and mentor learners, leaving a lasting impression on Cape Breton’s Gaelic music tradition.
