Eachdraidh-bheatha | Biography

Dan Allan Gillis was born on May 18, 1908, to Archie E. Gillis (Gilleasbuig mac Aonghais ’ic Alasdair) and Annie MacLellan. He was raised in the Gaelic-speaking community of Broad Cove Marsh, Inverness County. His maternal grandmother, Anna Thormaid MacDonald, was the sister of the bard Dòmhnall Thormaid, whose compositions featured prominently in the repertoires of Dan Allan and other local singers.

In 1941, Dan Allan married Margaret Rose Middleton (1913–1991) of Rockdale, Richmond County, and together they raised three sons and a daughter, making their home in Halifax. He instilled in his children a deep respect for family, education, and caring for others.

Community-minded and family-focused, Dan Allan had a generous heart and a strong sense of responsibility to those around him. He placed a high value on education—he was a voracious reader, literate in both English and Gaelic—and was always ready to lend a hand. Dan Allan played an instrumental role in the publication of Brìgh an Òrain and provided invaluable support and guidance to John Shaw at that time.

Dan Allan was also an exceptional singer, inheriting his musical talent and passion from his ancestors, renowned singers from Moidart, Scotland. He often sang with his sister, Annie Mae MacIntyre, at kitchen parties when she returned home from Boston. He was deeply knowledgeable about local Gaelic songs and the traditions they carried. A founding member of the Cape Breton Club in Halifax, Dan Allan and other Gaelic singers in the city were featured on CBC’s Don Messer’s Jubilee in the late 1950s, where they performed a milling frolic.

In addition to his musical legacy, Dan Allan was skilled in a variety of trades and served during the Second World War, sailing on ships. He and Margaret were well known for their hospitality, often offering a place to stay to Cape Bretoners visiting the city.

Dan Allan lived a long, meaningful life. He worked hard, prioritized people, and took great pride in his Cape Breton Gaelic roots. He passed away at the age of 97 and is buried in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia.
