(1864 - 1950)
Samuel Nicolson (Somhairle Aonghais) was born on Skye Mountain, Inverness County sometime in the mid -1800s. His father and mother were immigrants from the Isle of Skye in Scotland. Samuel married Jessie MacLellan of Dunakyn in 1873 and the couple went on to have four children. All but one would leave Cape Breton. Samuel was known for his quick wit, and people feared becoming the subject matter of his compositions. A man of many talents, Nicolson not only composed songs but was a carpenter, fiddler and piper with the 49th Highlanders band.
